The Internet Address Book
from SoloTech Software
v2.11
Copyright (c) 1995 by William E. Hogg M.D.
[A viewer version of the manual, "manual!!.exe",
which can be installed as a pop-up, TSR program,
is included in this archive.]
WHAT THE PROGRAM DOES
The Internet Address Book allows you to search the
Internet offline for sites of interest, without
having to spend valuable time and money looking up
that special address that has not yet made it onto
your hotlist. For this program to be useful, it
must be (1) Large (the registered version has over
15,000 addresses) and (2) Timely - all links have
been gathered in 1995, and are continuously
updated in the registered version. Although 15,000
sites sounds like it would cover the Internet
entirely, it actually only represents the most
popular and well-travelled sites. Of course, the
ever-evolving sprawl of the Web, and the fact that
it will never be able to catalogued completely, is
a large part of the appeal of the Internet. One
thing is certain, that among the 15,000 sites,
there will be links at those sites that lead to
places and things neither you, nor I, have seen
the likes of before.
INSTALLATION
Simply unzip the archive (the zipped file) in a
directory of your choice and note that two
programs are included "start.com" and
"start-hi.com".
GETTING STARTED
First of all, the program must be run from DOS or
a DOS shell, but not from inside Windows. Next,
the program can be started by running the program
"start.com". To operate, the program requires 24k
of lower DOS RAM memory. If you prefer to load
the program into high memory, taking literally 0K
of lower DOS RAM, then you can start the program
using "start-hi.com". Note that to load the
program into high memory, a memory manager must
already be installed, such as EMM386.exe, QEMM,
or 386Max. The two programs above initialize
memory for the function of the database. The
program will report "Error 09 - invalid pad or
wrong version" if the program is started with
"adbk.exe" instead of "start.com" or
"start-hi.com".
HOW TO NAVIGATE THROUGH THE PROGRAM
Throughout the program, the mouse can be used to
select buttons and scroll through text in the
windows. Clicking the mouse on a window allows
you to enter that window and scroll by using the
scroll bars, or the Up and Down Arrow Keys.
Notice that using the PgUp and PgDn actually
moves to the previous and next page,
respectively. You can just use the keyboard by
pressing the Tab key over and over until you
reach the desired button or Window. Arrow Keys
can also move to different buttons and windows.
Use the Tab key to move out of a window. Press
the Enter key to make a choice selection.
ALPHABET BUTTONS
On the main screen, you will encounter several
rows of buttons marked with letters alphabetically.
These buttons take you to the address lists that
begin with that letter of the alphabet. The buttons
can be selected with the mouse and a click of the
left mouse button, or use the arrow keys or Tab key
to move around the page, then select by pressing the
Enter key.
One tip about selecting the appropriate page. The
entries are sorted by their first letter, even if
the entry begins with "A" or "The". So to find the
"The Wonder Page" look under the "T" list not the
"W" list. Better yet, use the "Find" command to
locate "Wonder Page" directly for you.
DESCRIPTION WINDOW
This blue window has the brief descriptions of
each site. Notice that a highlighted line is able
to be moved up and down with the arrow keys, or by
using the mouse to click on the scroll bar. As you
move the highlight bar, notice that the address in
the red window below changes. Whatever is
highlighted in the blue description window will
cause a corresponding address to be displayed in
URL (Uniform Resource Locator) format in the red
window. The URL format is what is used in your
favorite Internet navigation or browser program.
ADDRESS WINDOW
This red Window shows the sites's address in URL
format. You can scroll the highlight bar in the
blue window. Whatever description the highlighted
bar is on in the blue window, the address will be
shown in the red window. These are displayed as
URLs, so that you can enter them into your Web
Browser's hot list or use them with the "Go"
command found in the Lynx Web browser.
COMMAND BUTTONS
[Find]
The "Find" command finds for you the very first
occurrence of a specific word or phrase that you
type into the dialog box that pops up. The
program will then highlight the term if found or
display a brief message stating that the term
could not be found. It is important for you to
realize that you are searching the one-line
descriptions of the sites in the blue window, not
the URL addresses in the red window. If your
search term is not found, try alternative search
terms, like "Federal" instead of "Government".
[Find Next]
The "Find Next" button allows you to continue
searching for other instances of the term you
originally searched for with the "Find" button.
While the "Find" button will only find the first
occurrence of the search term, this "Find Next"
button will continue the search, highlighting the
text that is found. Selecting the "Find Next"
button over and over will eventually take you
through the entire database of addresses.
[Notes]
The "Notes" button takes you to the "Notes" section
of the program. As you can see, there already is
information on the World Wide Web, and HTML. These
are on separate pages that can be reached by using
the PgUp and PgDn keys, or by selecting the Next
and Previous buttons. Text can be imported,
exported, or notes can be typed in as desired on
any of the five pages. Each Notes window contains
up to 30k of information, which can be viewed by
scrolling the text using the mouse or the up and
down arrow keys. The Notes pages receive the text
copied with the "Copy Text" command button, copying
the site information to the page that you specify.
Note that you can erase the text in a window of a
particular page, you can print the text, export the
text to a file, and import files less than 30k into
a text window on a specific page.
[Benefits]
The "Benefits" button takes you to the page where
the extensive list of benefits is outlined that
one receives through the registration of the
program. An "Order Form" button is included that
you takes you to the Order Form section. You can
print out the Order Form from that page.
[Copy Text]
This button allows you to copy the highlighted
site description and address to one of the pages
in the "Notes" section of the program. It will ask
you to specify which page number, from 1 to 5,
will receive the copied text. After you specify
the page number, the site information will be
copied to the last line of the page that you
specified. Note that you can then print this out,
or use the "Export" command to copy this
information to a file.
HELP BUTTON
The Help Button can be found in the top right
corner of the screen. Clicking on the "Help"
button, or using the [F1] key, takes you to the
program's Help screen. Click on different portions
of the screen to see a pop-up window that will
give you more info. For instance, using the mouse
to click on the "Navigating through the Program"
button will bring up a screen explaining which
keys to use for moving around the program. By
clicking on the blue window, red window, buttons
below, alphabet buttons, you can receive help on
these. The windows will automatically clear when
you leave Help, but there is a "Clear Windows"
button to clear the pop-up windows if you want to
get a better look at the screen. Clicking on one
portion of the screen clears the other parts of
the screen as a new window pops up.

CAVEATS
The ".PAD" files are subject to corruption if
you turn your computer off, reset it, or have a
power surge that does not allow the program to
save the files by exiting normally. There is a
good chance that if the program were running
while you turned the computer off or reset it,
the files have not been properly saved and have
become corrupted. The solution is simple. Make
a backup of your files or keep the archived
file you downloaded handy to replace any ".PAD"
files that have errors.
I work with these files daily and only have to
replace any of my files with backups only once
every 6 to 9 months, when the cat accidentally
steps on the switch for the surge protector
and shuts my power off. Only the file that was
open at the time of the power cutoff will
possibly be corrupted. The moral is take the
time to put your archived "Zip" file where you
can get to it if necessary and/or keep backup
copies of the ".PAD" files available.
SHAREWARE CONCEPTS
This program is distributed as Shareware. The
shareware method of distribution allows you to
evaluate a program prior to purchasing it. The
Internet Address Book is not free and it is not

registration to obtain a license for continued
use. Non-registered use of the Internet Address
Book beyond the trial period is strictly
